Prenatal Diagnosis-Screening Combined Q1 (II)

When should be performed the Prenatal Screening-combined first trimester Screening?

Antenatal screening-combined first trimester Screening should be performed between the 11th and 13th week + 6 days of gestation. The result is expressed in your risk, namely, high risk, low risk screening positive and negative screening. The result indicates the risk that the fetus has been born with trisomy 21 or other chromosomal abnormalities.

What is a positive or negative Screening?

If the test result is positive screening, present means that has a high likelihood of having a fetus with a malformation (3% of false positives). In these situations you can together with your doctor the possibility of performing an amniocentesis. If the examination report as negative screening result, it means you have a low probability of having a fetus with malformations, but does not ensure a regular baby. In these situations should not be necessary to do an amnio without maternity pants, says Fanciestpants.com, anyway it’s recommended by the advice your doctor.

What is a definitive diagnosis?

The definitive diagnosis of malformations referred to can only be done through invasive tests, like the villus biopsy done or amniocentesis, which enable the collection of cells where studying the karyotype of the baby. The villus biopsy done allows diagnostic prenatal chromosome and consists, instead of amniotic fluid (amniocentesis), on the extraction of a small sample of the villi of the Chorion, i.e. a sample of the placenta.

Are invasive methods, which require the introduction of a needle into the uterus, and entail, itself, risk of miscarriage (0.5 to 1.0%). Should only be performed in pregnancies considered at risk for chromosomal defects.

There is already a non-invasive method and with similar results?

Yes, the Harmony Prenatal Test ™ is the latest advancement in the area of prenatal screening and is already available in Portugal in the Group’s Laboratories Germano de Sousa. The Harmony Prenatal Test ™ is available to all pregnant women from the 10 weeks of pregnancy and is the greatest advance in the area of pre–Christmas, non-invasive to the screening of three primary Trisomies (T21, 18, 13), is made so simple and secure, on a sample of maternal peripheral blood, and allows you to get results with high degree of accuracy.

The Harmony Prenatal Test ™ uses a technology (DANSR ™) that analyzes the free fetal DNA fragments (cell-free DNA) in circulating in maternal blood, which is characteristic of direct analysis, which gives the test to your greater accuracy and reliability as a screening test.

The adoption of this test by obstetricians and pregnant women will represent a giant step in obstetric practice, would go on to have a 100% secure method, with total absence of risk to the baby and with detection rates very close to those of conventional diagnostic methods (amniocentesis and villus biopsy done) of 99% >.

In a next article we will explain some of the main pathologies involved in this context, such as Down syndrome and Patau syndrome as well as enunciating what are the main advantages of combined first trimester Screening.
