Combined First Trimester Prenatal Screening

The health of the mother and the fetus should be monitored throughout pregnancy.

From a medical point of view, the period of pregnancy is divided into 3 quarters and is the first quarter that can detect and reduce many health problems to identify both the mother and the fetus. This is the stage of pregnancy that the antenatal screening, analysis and echographic data set to determine the risk of the fetus be affected with a particular anomaly.

The antenatal screening-combined first trimester screening – is an early test that combines the ultrasound exam information and biochemical examination and assesses the level of risk to the fetus of Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) and Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome). This divides the population screening that he undergoes in two groups: high risk (positive screening) and low risk (negative screening). The knowledge of the type of risk to the fetus will help the future mother to decide if it will effect other complementary diagnostic tests and more specific to obtaining a “definitive” answer about whether or not this anomaly.
The completion of prenatal Screening is thus of the utmost importance, allowing for future mothers feel they are in a safe pregnancy and if a problem arises can early counseling with your doctor. According to the Fetal Medicine Foundation, an organization that promotes research in the field of fetal medicine, the combined first trimester screening has a 97% detection rate (in conjunction with the ultrasound), with 3% false positives, i.e., positive diagnosis and absence of anomaly.
